This guide covers the Gassan Toda Castle ruins, Kiyomizu-dera, the Adachi Museum of Art, Yasugibushi Performance Hall and the practical details of visiting Yasugi.

You can ride a free shuttle bus from JR Yasugi Station to the Adachi Museum of Art in about twenty minutes. The three-story pagoda and treasure hall at Kiyomizu-dera are open from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon, pausing from noon to one. The Gassan Toda Castle ruins are about fifteen minutes by car from Yasugi IC.

The view from the Gassan Toda Castle ruins, as old guidebooks describe it, takes in the Iinashi River winding north, the sandbar beyond it and the blue hills of the Shimane Peninsula. Mount Togami rises east of the town, and an old gazetteer notes that evergreens cover the whole mountain in every season.

Gassan Toda Castle Ruins

The Gassan Toda Castle ruins sit about fifteen minutes by car from Yasugi IC. The Yasugi City Historical Museum keeps opening hours from half past nine in the morning to five in the afternoon. It is closed every Tuesday, or on the following day when Tuesday is a national holiday.

The ruins crown a small hill standing on its own on the right bank of the Iinashi River, where an old gazetteer places them. The valley here runs up the Iinashi River, hemmed in between two mountains, as an old survey records. The car park at the Yasugi City Historical Museum is free and takes ten ordinary cars.

Kiyomizu-dera

Wooden temple gate above a stone staircase flanked by two stone lanterns among green trees

The grounds of Kiyomizu-dera, long described in guidebooks, spread across a mountainside under old trees and hold a three-story pagoda. The pagoda and treasure hall can be viewed from nine in the morning to four in the afternoon, pausing from noon to one. From December first to March thirty-first, reservations for viewing them are suspended.

The main hall has kept its shape through generations of repair, and an early survey states that pillars and beams from the original construction remain in place. From the high ground of the temple, the outlook that old guidebooks describe runs east toward Yonago and west over the Nakaumi lagoon, which spreads out like a mirror.

Kiyomizu-dera is about ten minutes by car from Yasugi IC. From Yasugi Station the drive takes about fifteen minutes. For junior high and high school students, viewing the pagoda and treasure hall costs three hundred yen. Shokinkan, in the temple grounds, is open from eleven in the morning to five in the afternoon.
