Kumano Hongu rewards a full day because its two set pieces fit together so neatly: the old shrine site at Oyunohara is about ten minutes on foot from the main sanctuary of Kumano Hongu Taisha, and Tsuboyu in Yunomine Onsen is bathed in half-hour shifts. This article covers travel times from Kii-Tanabe, Shin-Osaka and Nanki-Shirahama Airport, the walk to Oyunohara, admission and times for the treasure hall and the two baths, when the tea room, tourist office and taxi operate, and an order for the day.
Getting to Kumano Hongu
Hongu is reached by rail to Kii-Tanabe and then by road. From Shin-Osaka Station, the JR limited express Kuroshio train takes about one hundred thirty minutes to Kii-Tanabe Station. From Kii-Tanabe Station, a local bus or the Meiko Bus rapid Kumano Kodo-go covers the rest. A direct bus from Nanki-Shirahama Airport is the alternative for anyone flying in.
| Route | Time |
|---|---|
| Kii-Tanabe Station to Kumano Hongu by local bus | about 120 minutes |
| Kii-Tanabe Station to Kumano Hongu by the Meiko Bus rapid Kumano Kodo-go | about 100 minutes |
| Shin-Osaka Station to Kii-Tanabe Station by the JR limited express Kuroshio | about 130 minutes |
| Nanki-Shirahama Airport to Kumano Hongu by direct bus | 140 minutes |

Two payment notes apply to the road leg. On the Ryujin Bus Kumano Hongu line, credit-card touch payment began on September nineteenth, twenty twenty-six. The rapid hot spring bus runs from September nineteenth to December tenth of the same year and also takes touch payment. Before you ride, locate the shrine stop with Kumano Hongu Taisha on Google Maps.
Kumano Hongu Taisha and Oyunohara
The shrine visit has two parts, the main sanctuary of Kumano Hongu Taisha and the old shrine site at Oyunohara. The walk between them, crossing the national road, takes about ten minutes on foot. Because they sit so close, there is no need to choose one over the other, and the order can follow the light or the weather.

| Place | Admission |
|---|---|
| the treasure hall at Kumano Hongu Taisha | adults 300 yen, children 100 yen |
The treasure hall belongs to Kumano Hongu Taisha and charges the admission shown above, with separate adult and child rates. Oyunohara is also where a memorial ceremony for Ippen Shonin is held on the twenty-third of every month, in front of his monument, so that date is worth noting when you pick a day for the shrine.

Yunomine Onsen: Tsuboyu and the Public Bath
Two baths at Yunomine Onsen are covered here, Tsuboyu and the public bath. Tsuboyu is open from six in the morning until nine at night, with reception until half past eight. It is taken in half-hour shifts, which is what sets it apart. The public bath keeps the same business hours and the same reception cutoff.

| Bath | Who | Admission |
|---|---|---|
| Tsuboyu | adults | 800 yen |
| Tsuboyu | children under 12 | 400 yen |
| the public bath | adults | 400 yen |
| the public bath | children under 12 | 200 yen |
| Bath | Hours |
|---|---|
| Tsuboyu | 6:00-21:00, reception ends 20:30, in 30-minute shifts |
| the public bath | 6:00-21:00, with reception until 20:30 |
Of the two, Tsuboyu is the one to plan around, because its half-hour shifts set the timing of your soak. At Tsuboyu, children under twelve pay a lower rate than adults. The public bath also sets a lower rate for children under twelve. To find the bath on arrival, use Tsuboyu on Google Maps. To stay overnight near the baths, browse places to stay in Hongu.
Tea, Taxis and the Tourist Office
Four services shape the timing of a day in Hongu: the Chinchoan tea room, the Kumano Hongu Tourist Association office, the local taxi, and the evening ride share. The tea room keeps business hours from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon. A serving of moude mochi with matcha there is priced at three hundred fifty yen.
| Place or service | Hours or price |
|---|---|
| the Chinchoan tea room | 9:00-16:00 |
| moude mochi and matcha at the tea room | 350 yen |
| the Kumano Hongu Tourist Association office | 9:00-17:00 |
| the local taxi | 8:30-16:00 |
| the ride share to destinations within Hongu town | 17:00-20:30 |
The local taxi works a daytime schedule, with business hours from half past eight in the morning until four in the afternoon. After that, the ride share to destinations within Hongu town runs from five in the evening until half past eight. The Kumano Hongu Tourist Association office is open from nine in the morning to five in the afternoon.
Planning One Day in Hongu
Build the day around each cutoff, earliest first. Take the Meiko Bus rapid Kumano Kodo-go from Kii-Tanabe Station, which reaches Hongu in about one hundred minutes. Start at Kumano Hongu Taisha, then walk about ten minutes to Oyunohara. Before the tea room's business hours end at four in the afternoon, stop at the Chinchoan tea room for moude mochi.

Then move on to Yunomine Onsen, where Tsuboyu's reception ends at half past eight in the evening, which leaves room for a half-hour shift. The Kumano Hongu Tourist Association office stays open until five in the afternoon. Note too that the Kumano Hongu Taisha Reitaisai annual grand festival is held on April thirteenth to fifteenth.
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Kumano Hongu Taisha Reitaisai annual grand festival | April 13 to 15 |
| Kushizaki Daishi festival | March 21 |
| Kenyu-sai hot spring offering festival | September 26 |
| memorial ceremony for Ippen Shonin at Oyunohara | the 23rd of every month |
If one day feels too short for both the shrine and the baths, compare places to stay in Hongu and give Yunomine the evening.
