Kurashiki is a practical choice from Okayama because the conventional-line trip between the two takes seventeen minutes. From JR Kurashiki Station, the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter is about a fifteen-minute walk. This guide covers the Shinkansen to Okayama from Tokyo, Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, the conventional line to Kurashiki, the walk into the Bikan district, the Kurashiki River Boat, the Ohara Museum of Art, UKIYO-E KURASHIKI, Hayashi Genjuro Shoten, lunch and sweets, and the Kurashiki Byobu Festival.

Getting to Kurashiki via Okayama

The plan here is to ride the Shinkansen to Okayama and then change to a conventional-line service, which takes seventeen minutes between Okayama and Kurashiki. The Shinkansen times from Tokyo, Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima to Okayama follow, together with the figures from Okayama Momotaro Airport and by expressway.

  • The Shinkansen (Nozomi/Sakura) between Okayama and Tokyo takes about 3 hours 20 minutes.
  • The Shinkansen (Nozomi/Sakura) between Okayama and Shin-Osaka takes about 50 minutes.
  • The Shinkansen (Nozomi/Sakura) between Okayama and Hiroshima takes about 40 minutes.
  • The conventional-line trip between Kurashiki and Okayama takes 17 minutes.
  • The trip from Okayama Momotaro Airport to Kurashiki Station North Exit takes about 35 minutes.
  • The trip from Kurashiki IC to Okayama IC on the San'yo Expressway takes about 10 minutes by expressway.

Tokyo is the longest of the three Shinkansen approaches, while Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima are each under an hour from Okayama. If you have time at the interchange, our guide to Okayama Korakuen and the castle in the morning covers the city itself. If you would like to begin at the Ohara Museum of Art when it opens at nine, browse places to stay in Kurashiki.
