The red brick warehouses went up between nineteen oh one and nineteen twenty-one as storehouses for military supplies of the Maizuru Naval District. Eleven surviving warehouses are two-storey brick, one is steel-frame brick, and eight were designated national Important Cultural Properties in Heisei twenty. Black dye on one outer wall is wartime paint, applied so it would not stand out.

The Brick Museum and Building Four
Step into the Red Brick Museum, a steel-frame brick structure built in Meiji thirty-six as a torpedo warehouse of the former Maizuru Navy. Inside, bricks used in structures around the world are on display, and a corner that recreates a Hoffmann kiln shows how bricks were made.

If you also go into Building Four, you are inside a brick warehouse put up in nineteen oh two for the ordnance depot of the former Navy. In April of two thousand sixteen the site became a Japan Heritage under a title that links the naval districts of Yokosuka, Kure, Sasebo and Maizuru.
